Accessibility Statement

Our commitment

We want every child to be able to read Chess and Stilz, including children who are blind or have low vision, use a screen reader, find their way with a keyboard, need larger text, have dyslexia, or like to be read to.

The standard we work to

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, the middle of its three levels. We are not there everywhere yet, and the list further down says what we are still working on.

What is built

  • For readers with dyslexia or who want an easier page: bigger text, wider spacing, an easier-to-read typeface, and a softer page color, all on each child's "My reading" page.
  • Read-aloud in two narrator voices, Sable and Whit, on every story page. It lights up each sentence as it speaks and reads the choices too. The hallway, the title page, the dedication and the ending use your device's own voice.
  • The first time a child taps read-aloud, they choose a narrator. They can change it on their "My reading" page.
  • We strive to describe every image, so a screen reader can say what each picture shows.
  • A "Look up a word" mode that works from the keyboard.
  • Buttons, choices and page turns are built to work without a mouse, including the PIN pad.
  • After each choice, screen readers are told about the new page.
  • The Rule Book and pop-up windows are built to work with screen readers.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, we follow that setting.
  • You can pinch to zoom.

Known limits

  • The trailer on our website is a short preview. The full accessibility features are in the app.
  • We plan to have the app reviewed by an outside accessibility specialist.

Tell us what is not working

If something gets in your way, please email us at hello@chessandstilz.com. It helps to know:

  • which page you were on
  • your device and browser, and your screen reader if you use one
  • what happened, and what you expected to happen

We will reply within five working days and tell you what we are doing to fix it.
