WITH THANKS

My mother, Joan Atwood, is in this book in places I am not going to point out. She worked out how it ends. She is also behind one of the two or three things this story is actually about, and behind the way you got to see something you were never meant to see.

I argued with her about every one of them. She was right about every one of them. She spent thirty years in schools, so this is not surprising to anyone but me.

My father, Barry Atwood, is the reason this book sounds the way it does. Almost none of it happened. It is all told the way he tells things, which he got from his father, who was the best storyteller any of us knew. The Hatter is their fault, and so is the way two old friends argue in these pages. When I was small I only got the larger-than-life versions, and it took me years to work out that those were the point. He is still having adventures. We are in most of them now, and I would still rather hear his version than remember my own.

My husband, Jet, has looked at more versions of the same picture than any person should be asked to, and told me the truth about every single one. He also made some of them, and his are the better ones. He is getting promoted. He has not accepted the job yet.

My daughter is not named anywhere in this book, and that is on purpose. She is in it anyway. Chess and Stilz have had a third conspirator from the start, and she has never once taken my side.
